"It isn’t “a little hobby” either, a way to while away a few idle hours - a comment that brings to mind the condescending way their contemporaries viewed 19th century female novelists (an attitude that isn’t totally extinct yet, I’m sorry to say)." Amen. Not a "little hobby." Could not find "Key Ring" btw, the link didn't work and RF doesn't have a search.

I'm from a beach town. The beach is rarely a place to read much less write. It's for total relaxation. There's always a glare, sand and wind! Indoors is much better for both activities, but I don't recommend down at the beach reading or writing. I know how aggravating it is to have your laptop not work. I hope you savored every moment of your vacation and stored away some great memories for your writing.

Well, I don't run marathons anymore: five miles is a long run for me these days. But the parallels between running and writing are striking (and not just because I get my best ideas during and just after my morning runs). Each day's writing session is another mile (but with a lot less sweat). After a while, the miles stack up, and when the book is finished it feels VERY much like the end of a long race. And just like with running, the more I write (and read) the better I feel. (I realize I am commenting only on a small part of your post--I enjoyed the rest of it, too!)

I'm thinking you should now travel with two Mac airs. Just in case.

Then that would be relaxing :)

Great post. I totally get the friends wanting us to pause. And I loved the running metaphor.

LOL, totally. I could feel your frustration, irritation, still while trying to vacate. Oh well, your Mac gave you 8 good years, that's 5 more than most of us get with our PCs. You would have done nothing but write here the past two weeks. We had only 2 days with sun. All cold rain, lots of it.

Ha! Ok, to be clear though:

I viscerally felt your pain. I delighted only in your storytelling of it! 😊

Martine! My apologies but I am smiling ear to ear - not that I don’t feel your pain - I abhor technology but that’s because I’m too stupid to subjugate it - but because I found your reliving relaying recapturing that literal nightmare utterly delightful! So you, nonetheless, managed to brighten my day and salvage a win as far as I’m concerned. Thanks for sharing!

“No, telling stories is simply the job I choose to do because it makes me happy.”

The diamond.

This makes me long for a vacation. Without hassles. Writing for me is purely for fun. Even editing! It makes me happy. And irritates my wife (she hates the Gunselle stories.) Glad you haven't let this laptop problem slow you down. And I really should read "The Moonstone" again one day.
